چکیده

The installation procedures (which induce mechanical damage) and abrasion can cause unwanted changes on the properties of the geotextiles. In this work, a nonwoven polypropylene geotextile was subjected to three degradation tests: (1) mechanical damage, (2) abrasion and (3) mechanical damage followed by abrasion (successive exposure). The damage caused by the degradation tests was evaluated by tensile, tearing and static puncture tests. Based on the changes occurred in the mechanical properties, reduction factors were determined. Results showed that the degradation tests provoked relevant reductions in the mechanical strength of the geotextile (higher reductions in the successive exposure to both degradation tests). The reduction factors for the combined effect of mechanical damage and abrasion obtained in the successive exposure to both degradation tests were different (slightly higher) than those obtained by the traditional methodology (determination of reduction factors separately for each degradation test and further multiplication). © 2017 Portuguese Society of Materials (SPM). Filtration Performance of Two-Layer Geotextile Systems

Nonwoven geotextiles are commonly used in filtration applications. For some applications, however, a nonwoven geotextile filter may not have the required mechanical properties to withstand deformations, and an additional woven geotextile is usually employed in design. While reinforcement is an important function expected from these two-layer geotextile systems, filtration is another function th...

Long-term filtration performance of nonwoven geotextile-sludge systems

A study of the filtration behaviour of contaminated wastewater treatment sludges was conducted. The laboratory portion of the study included a series of filtration tests with different nonwoven geotextiles. Filtration performance of the sludge–nonwoven-geotextile systems was also observed in field test cells by exhuming geotextile samples from the cells after exposure followed by analysis. The ...

Use of artificial neural networks to estimate installation damage of nonwoven geotextiles

This paper presents a feed forward back-propagation neural network model to predict the retained tensile strength and design chart in order to estimation of the strength reduction factors of nonwoven geotextiles due to installation process. A database of 34 full-scale field tests were utilized to train, validate and test the developed neural network and regression model. The results show that t...

Synergy between mechanical damage and abrasion of a composite geosynthetic and its variability

In this paper results of tests to assess the effect of mechanical damage (generally associated with installation processes) and abrasion are presented. Laboratory tests were carried out. The material tested is a composite consisting of two overlapped geosynthetics: a nonwoven geotextile and a woven geogrid. The composite was submitted to each referred agent (mechanical damage and abrasion damag...

Evaluation of Floorcovering Abrasion Resistance by Means of Image Processing Technique

An important factor in material quality is the time duration that materials are used (known as substance lifetime). Lifetime is a function of several factors, and among them wearing and abrasion resistances are more important than the other aspects. In addition, to the physical and mechanical properties, abrasion has a significant effect on the textiles appearance. This phenomenon considerably ...
